After leaving his hometown and studying for a couple of years at a four-year university, Mitch Johnson decided he needed a fresh start. He found it at 91¿ì»îÁÖ.

The results are an associate’s in applied science degree in computer networking, and a solid job at a Kansas City, Mo., engineering firm.

The Great Bend native had studied computer engineering at Kansas State University for five semesters before deciding to transfer to Barton.

91¿ì»îÁÖ’s Center for Adult Education will soon begin its nine-week GED Preparation Class. Orientation classes are the first step to obtaining the Kansas State High School Diploma through the GED Prep Program. Students must attend all orientation classes on July 22-25, and the first day of actual classes is July 29. Failure to attend all sessions will result in the removal of the student from the program. The center is located at 1025 Main St. in Great Bend.

They say necessity is the mother of invention. That was certainly the driving force behind Melissa Huff’s decision to reinvent herself and study early childhood education.

While Huff was serving in the National Guard and working full time, there wasn’t a daycare option available in her community. When her service term with the Guard ended, she decided to start her own daycare. Years later, she wanted to study early childhood education to advance her career.

Fort Riley Soldier James Re has been deployed since January, but he traveled thousands of miles to share just a few seconds of joy with his wife, Jennifer, as she crossed the stage Thursday afternoon at the Fort Riley Education Consortium’s annual commencement ceremony at the Marriott in Junction City. She received her associate degree in liberal studies with an emphasis in pre-nursing.

91¿ì»îÁÖ will offer transitioning Fort Sill Soldiers, Veterans and family members with DOD ID cards, a grant-funded two-week certificate program at no cost to participants.

The Hazardous Waste Worker Training (HWWT) program gives Soldiers credentials to help them find work after their tenure in the US Army ends. The next course is set from June 17-28 at the Truman Education Center B3281.
