Barton Career Advisor Nicole Serpan, who works with inmates at Ellsworth Correctional Facility (ECF) via the Building Academic Skills In Correctional Settings (BASICS) program, was named the Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC) Outstanding Contract Employee of the Year. She received a certificate from Governor Colyer upon meeting with him Monday morning at the Capitol Building in Topeka.

The Shafer Art Gallery will host the Cuna Mutual Retirement Solutions Art and Science Encounter Series: Beauty and the Beetle Family Day starting at 10 a.m. June 23 in the gallery. Family Day is a free event full of activities, including a puppet show performed by the StoneLion Puppet Theatre, a visit from the Kansas State University Insect Ambassador Zoo and various bug related crafts.

鈥嬧婻estocking paper goods at Great Bend Head Start daycare was a cross-town trip before 91快活林 got involved.

Head Start contacted Matt Mazouch, Barton鈥檚 Carpentry Instructor at Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility, after seeing an ad for storage sheds. Larned Correctional Facility inmates construct the sheds through Barton鈥檚 Building Academic Skills in Correctional Settings (BASICS) carpentry class. The class teaches inmates how to frame a floor, walls, a roof, etc.

91快活林 will host a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 7 听to celebrate the launch of a completely new and innovative schedule for delivering online courses. BARTonline, the college鈥檚 online learning platform, now offers 15 online sessions throughout the year in four, six, eight and 16 week formats, meaning students are no longer confined to traditional semesters.

91快活林 will offer a grant-funded two-week certificate program at no cost to transitioning Fort Sill Soldiers and family members with Department of Defense ID cards.

The Hazardous Waste Worker (HWW) program gives Soldiers credentials to help them find work after their tenure in the US Army ends. The next course is set from June 18-29 at Truman Education Center B3281 on post.

The Barton Theatre Department will hold open auditions for its summer production of the comedy one-acts 鈥淭he Proposal鈥 and 鈥淭he Bear鈥 by Anton Chekhov from 4-6 p.m. June 12 and 13 in the Fine Arts Auditorium. The Theatre Department is looking to cast four males and four females who are 25-60 year鈥檚 old. Those who wish to audition may show up during the allotted hours on either night. No preparation or experience is necessary.

Graduates from 10 colleges of the Fort Riley Education Services Consortium gathered Thursday afternoon to celebrate the end of a chapter in their educational journeys. Despite the spacious venue, a large conference center ballroom at the Hilton Garden Inn in Manhattan, it was standing room only. And, the air was electric with the energy from the graduates and their families ready to hear their name and achievement announced from the podium.

Susanne Yarmer and her son, Justin White, did not expect to walk across the stage to accept their associate degrees on the same day, but their lives took a few turns and they celebrated the milestone together at 91快活林 on May 11.

Yarmer initially began her college education at Barton right after high school, as many do, but transitioned from the role of student to mother and put her education on the backburner.

91快活林鈥檚 Center for Adult Education will soon begin its nine-week GED Preparation Class. Students must attend all orientation classes May 21-24, and the first day of class May 29. Failure to attend all five days will result in removal of the student from the program. The center is located at 1025 Main St. in Great Bend.

There is a one-time $65 fee for materials.听Once students have completed the preparation courses, they will be able to take the official GED test. The cost to take the GED test is $132.
