According to weather reports, the 100 degree heat is supposed to break starting today with temperatures a more normal ninety or so degrees with chances for rain.�� We cope with heat through air-conditioning, drinking plenty of fluids, dressing appropriately, finding shade, and sweating.�� But have you ever wondered how crop plants cope with excessive temperatures or why plants wilt?�� They can’t hide or sweat but within limits they have very effective coping mechanisms.�� Please keep in mind this is the Readers’ Digest version.

Tickets for the Barton Foundation’s 38th Annual Big Benefit Auction themed “A Political Party” are available now until Aug 15. Tickets are $35 each of $280 per table of eight. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the live auction starts at 8 p.m. on August 27 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Great Bend.

Today is July 17th so we are officially halfway through summer.�� Let’s spend a minute and take stock of where area producers stand.�� It appears, based on forecasts, the area will experience above normal temperatures over the next month and equal chances of above or below normal precipitation.

91�����’s eighth-annual Wounded Warrior Golf Scramble, which benefits wounded soldiers from Fort Riley, is set for Saturday, August 27.

The Wounded Warrior Scramble is an opportunity to not only support our soldiers, but thank them for their dedicated service to our country.

Tomorrow is Independence Day, a day to celebrate.�� For most it’s a day at the lake, a barbecue, and definitely fireworks.�� Hopefully, we all take a moment to reflect on what happened two hundred and forty years ago and perhaps contemplate politics in 2016.�� Finally add the importance our agricultural heritage to the mix.

The Shafer Art Gallery will host a clay flower making workshop titled “Fantastic Flowers” in conjunction with the “Eufloria” exhibit from 2-4 p.m. July 14 and 21. The first class will be creating the flowers and the second will be painting and surface decoration.

Guest artist Christina Lamoureaux will lead the class and participants will create flowers from paperclay using a fun, lyrical process.

The class is for ages 10 to adult. A donation of $10 is suggested.
