Retired Sgt. Jenise Hiram grew up in an environment of alcoholism, crime and violence in The Bronx, New York. In terms of life trajectories, hers did not begin with a high likelihood of a bright future. Thursday, however, she proved origins and situations can be overcome.
鈥淚鈥檓 supposed to be a statistic,鈥 she told graduates of the Fort Riley Education Consortium schools Thursday afternoon during the consortium鈥檚 commencement ceremony. 鈥淏ut I鈥檓 here. It鈥檚 a change in mindset we all made.鈥

The Barton Theatre Program will have a new leader at the helm. Former Dean of Academics Dr. Rick Abel is now the Theatre Program Director and Instructor. Abel has a strong background and passion for the arts and theatre is an area about which he is especially passionate.

91快活林鈥檚 Center for Adult Education will soon be starting its nine-week GED Preparation Class. The orientation day, which is a prerequisite for the course, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on May 23 at 1025 Main St. in Great Bend. 听
The class sessions are from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday from May 24 through June 16.

91快活林 has announced the winners of its Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest.听 The winners are as follows: Adreinne Danner, Natalie Espino and Fernando Rojas. 听Each winner received a $50 Great Bend Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development gift certificate.

91快活林 will be closed Monday, May 30 for Memorial Day.听 The college is now on summer hours.听 Office hours are 7:30 a.m. 鈥 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.听 The college will be closed on Fridays through August 5.听听
